Despite missing the opening match of the 2004 Bundaberg Rum Rugby Series with a knee injury, Stirling Mortlock returned to the starting lineup for the second Test against Scotland and filled the outside centre spot for the rest of the winter season scoring four tries in seven Tests.
In 2004, Mortlock took over the captaincy at the Brumbies and showed no signs of it affecting his powerful running game. He was the Super 12 leading try scorer at the end of the regular season with nine and his game has matured considerably since taking on the leadership role.
Starting out as a winger at Test level, Mortlock secured the Australian number 13 jersey at the 2003 Rugby World Cup where his 80 metre intercept try against the All Blacks in the Semi Final will be a lasting memory of the tournament for years to come.
His international debut season in 2000 is one of the greatest in Test history, having broken numerous records in his first seven Tests. He became the fastest Australian to reach 50 and 100 Test points; has scored the most points and highest number of penalties [16] by any Australian in his first five Tests; and created history by becoming the first Australian to score 20 points or more in four consecutive Tests. All this, and a last-second penalty goal from the sideline to clinch Australia's first Tri Nations title against South Africa in Durban.
Mortlock represented Australia at U21 and U19 level and toured Argentina with the Wallabies before even playing a Super 12 match in 1997.
